Holistic Resource Management
The practice of using cattle to embed seed into unstable soils. The cattle's manure acts as fertilizer for the newly planted seeds. Water of the seeded area is required for plant establishment. Cattle can be fed native prairie seeds that require scarification before germination can take place. This type of management requires little plant maintenance , however it does require a stable work force to move the cattle between paddocks. Local youth, employment agencies and homeless shelters could serve as a large part in the restoration process.Productivity
Cattle were researched through several different lens, pushing the limits of productivity that is expected of our food source. Current feed lot practices in the major ranching corporations strive to get the maximum number of cattle into the minimal amount of space [0.01 acre], which leads to outbreaks of disease, poor quality meat and a miserable experience of what cattle should be.Local Resources
Local cattle and feed supplies were located and incorporated into the site feasibility studies. The project will form a co-operative between the city, local ranchers and farmers. The ranchers and farmers will then be eligible for the Conservation Security Program subsidy.Paddock Rotation
Essential for proper establishment and growth of the plantings. The site is divided into cells that each contain a water source. The cells are then divided into paddocks that the cattle are rotated between. Paddocks can be grazed for 6 days in the spring with a 2 week rest, but in the summer a grazing period of 3 days is followed with a 6 week rest.
