Science, Art and Psychology, a personal perspective.
Biological Science encompasses a full spectrum of scale, ranging from large organizational systems to the minute details involved in cellular production. Scientific study has allowed me a deeper understanding of the functional relationship between the larger ideas and the details. It excites my curiosity into further investigation of how differing systems interrelate, the physical manifestations that occur and how it will impact surrounding systems.
Art is an interaction between the artist, the viewer and the environment. Art has the ability to evoke memories and emotions within the viewer, outside of the artist's original intention. Land Art is tactile and experiential, and literally puts the viewer in the creation. These design installations are created with the understanding that it is not permanent. Either man or nature will deconstruct the space given time. It is more about the way it has changed the visitor's perception of the place or thing, if only for a moment.
Psychology strives to understand the human experience. The way we experience others, our environment and ourselves. This science explores our inner, often unspoken world. It uses all five senses to gather the understanding of place. It studies spaces and their affect on the users, even manipulating the users' actions in the design.
Landscape Architecture combines science, art, psychology and many more elements to create a profession that is truly about people, place and perception.
